This was my first time completing a GDC (Gasparilla Distance Classic) running event. I’ve wanted to for years, but the race weekend usually interferes with RunDisney Princess weekend, which has held a special place in my heart since, well, since my running journey started. That’s a story for another day though.

Register Now!

Let’s start with registration, as that is usually where one starts. The sign-up was relatively simple and straightforward. I do wish I had added the race photos prior to the race because the price jumped quite a bit afterwards. As of 2026, they use Race Roster for their registration platform. I only signed up for the half marathon, but Gasparilla has a full running weekend complete with kid races, dogs, and challenges! The races didn’t end up selling out until very close to event weekend. They sent lots of reminders and communication with information and Gasparilla does a great job managing their social media channels and putting information out via those methods. As someone who is perpetually paranoid about missing something, I am ok with too much information.

Expo Day!

This was probably the best expo I’ve been to and that is taking Disney and Chicago marathon expos into consideration. All of the vendors were chatty and helpful and actually had really cool giveaways. I brought my son with me and he walked out with a tote bag full of goodies and snacks!

Solo Female Review:

As with going anywhere as a solo female, you need to have your wits about you but especially in downtown Tampa. There are a few parking options for the expo and races, and I parked in the Fort Brooke Garage and had a very short (maybe 5 minutes) walk to the expo and race staging area. While I wasn’t “solo” for expo day, I was on race morning but were plenty of people around going to and from the expo and race. I did not notice any strange characters loitering around. The garage charges a parking fee which you can pay via app.

There are indoor restrooms to use before heading to the start line and the building, which is the same hotel that hosts the expo, offers a place to get out of any moody Florida weather happening.

Race Experience:

Overall, there was a great atmosphere but there is some room for improvement.

The starting corrals- these were probably the worst part of the entire weekend. Fast people up front, as they should be. Everyone else was being fed through a break in the corral gate. Which was right off a curb. In the middle of the herd. Despite being asked to do so, people did not want to move back, and they also did not want to make a path for those entering from said break in the gate to be able to move back. I did not understand the break in the gate approach. It would have made so much more sense to just loop the herd around flowed in instead of trickling in one by one through a metal barrier.

While waiting for my turn to go through said barrier I witnessed a first. This was the first time I had ever seen not one but TWO people without bibs enter the corrals. The race official at the gate stopped them and asked them about their bibs, the girls said “Oh, they’re in the car, it’s fine” and they were allowed in. I’m very much a You Do You person but seriously- don’t be those girls for so many reasons. Two- the race officials need more support. The lady who let them in was already surrounded by so many people trying to squeeze through the BREAK IN THE GATE and I don’t blame her for not wanting to argue and just get people in. Ok, I’m digressing on the gate thing now. But seriously, how can we fix this Gasparilla?

Off We Go!

The views on this course are amazing. The old Spanish architect, the ocean, the city skyline- absolutely beautiful and worth going just for those.

On course support was lacking in my opinion. I started towards the back, and I believe it was the second water stop was out of cups by the time I ran by and there were a lot of people behind me. I also think being in Tampa with the humidity, there should be more frequent hydration stops. Hindsight, I should have brought my belt with bottles or a handheld.

I don’t remember any GDC sanctioned food being offered on course but my memory is shotty at best. Naturally some strangers had candy and other libations but even those were few and far between. As a pirate race, I expected much more crowd party favors.

Speaking of strangers on course, the crowd support was minimal until Bayshore. There was lots of cheering spectators when I got there, except most of them were cheering for the front of the pack. By the time I looped around and ran it back, the crowd had dispersed tremendously, leaving us back-of-the-packers alone with our thoughts, the medics, and the handful of musicians still out there. Huge shoutout to all of you for keeping our spirits up!

The finish line crowd was much better. Lots of cheering and the race announcers were so motivational and cheerful. Pepperjack was also there and was down for high fives and selfies. We were also blessed with quite the assortment of post-race water and snacks and of course the runner’s buffet and free beer- which was a little bit of a walk to get to but always worth it!

Overall, I enjoyed Gasparilla. The course is flat and the views of the bay are stunning.  I am signed up for the half marathon again in 2027. I’m bringing friends and a better costume game next time. I’m looking forward to another great race!
